The 27-year-old Slovakian won the Zug Open title with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 victory in the final against Frenchman Harold Mayot (ATP 171), just one week after his triumph at the Challenger 125 in San Marino.
In front of a sold-out crowd on Zug's Centre Court, Lukas Klein played aggressive tennis, just as he had in previous rounds. Dubbed the ‘Switzerland slayer’ after victories over Henry Bernet, Marc-Andrea Hüsler and Jakub Paul in the semi-finals, the Slovakian did not deviate from his game plan even after losing a tiebreak in the second set. After 1 hour and 46 minutes of exhausting rallies in glorious final weather, he raised the winner's trophy to the Zug sky.
‘It was an incredible week for me in Zug. I enjoyed every moment, even though the weather didn’t always make it easy. I’m overjoyed that I was able to add the title in Zug to the one I won in San Marino’ said Klein at the award ceremony. With the 125 points he won at the Dialectic Zug Open and the 125 points from San Marino, the Slovakian is rapidly approaching the top 100 in the world rankings (currently: ATP 119). This also secures him a place in the US Open qualifiers in mid-August.
